A Different Thread

Book your Burgerme table to avoid disappointment: Call 01497821762 or email eat@globeathay.co.uk
8pm   Tickets £10 Advance / £12 Standard
Transatlantic Americana group, A Different Thread, is fronted by Alicia Best from Durham, North Carolina and Robert Jackson from Lichfield, England. The two first met busking in Ireland — a chance encounter that sparked a musical adventure across a dozen countries, touring, writing, and living in constant motion.
Their authentic performance caught the attention of Shrewsbury Folk Festival, where a win in 2017 earned them a coveted spot on the main stage. They have since landed features on both BBC and NPR, as well as support slots with notable artists like Jody Stevens (Big Star), Native Harrow, and the Milk Carton Kids.
With nods to 70s' folk revival, country, and Appalachian blues, their music, featuring a suitcase drum-kit, fiddle, and harmonica, exudes a timeless quality. Drawing influence from Cash and Carter, and Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings, their hair-raising harmonies tell heartfelt tales of love, loss, and life on the open road.

Live music from SARAH McQUAID

Book your Burgerme table to avoid disappointment: Call 01497821762 or email eat@globeathay.co.uk
Doors 7.30 Start 8pm    Earlybird Ticket £13 / £14 Standard
“One of the most instantly recognisable voices in current music … Shades of Joni Mitchell in a jam with Karen Carpenter and Lana Del Rey.” —Trust The Doc
Sarah McQuaid’s lush, chocolatey voice combines with her engaging personality, “subtle mastery onstage” (Huffington Post) and “brilliant musicianship” (fRoots) on acoustic and electric guitars, piano and (occasionally) drum to create a truly immersive experience.
Born in Spain, raised in Chicago, holding dual Irish and American citizenship and now settled in rural England, she brings the eclecticism of her background to her “captivating, unorthodox songwriting” (PopMatters) and choice of material, spanning genres and defying categorisation.
All this is abundantly demonstrated by her new live album and video series The St Buryan Sessions — but needs to be savoured in person to be fully appriciated, described as “a wonderful, expressive and intimate live album from a consummate performer.” by Folk Radio UK and made it onto “Best of 2021” lists on three continents.

JOHN BRAMWELL (of I Am Kloot)

Book your Burgerme table to avoid disappointment: Call 01497821762 or email eat@globeathay.co.uk
Doors 7pm   Start 8pm    Advance tickets £22.50
John Bramwell of I Am Kloot, one of the UK's most cherished and revered songwriters, performs solo at The Globe at Hay.
John has been on a never-ending rolling adventure since his workings away from the cherished, Mercury Prize nominated Mancunian band,I Am Kloot. February 23rd 2024 marked the release of the acclaimed, sophomore album ‘The Light Fantastic‘.
‘A unique both literally and metaphorically’ – Lauren Laverne ‘My favourite songwriter of all time’ – Cate Blanchett [who chose Bramwell-penned ‘Proof’ as her Desert Island Disk on the BBC Radio 4 show] ‘The UK’s finest export’ New York Times ‘Bramwell’s new songs are spellbinding’ The Guardian
Lauded across the board, ‘The Light Fantastic‘ is a masterclass in emotionally charged and melodically driven tunes for the adventurous. “After both my Mum and Dad died, I started writing these songs to cheer myself up,” John admits with typical candour. “The themes are taken from my dreams at the time. Wake up and take whatever impression I had from what I could remember of my dream and write that.” Despite the sentiment, the songs are surprisingly uplifting and have been lighting up, and selling out, countless live shows across the country.
‘Wonderfully grown-up pop music delivered by an adept songwriter’ – 4* MOJO

‘A splendid solo set of sumptuous vocal harmonies’ – UNCUT

‘The regular harmonising with his cast of supporting musicians is especially beautiful’ CLASH

‘Bramwell goes for the kind of classic melody-rich songwriting reminiscent of Tim Hardin, Neil Young and other introspective types... this is hazy music with purpose, and very pretty with it’ – The Times, 4/5

'WORD PAINTINGS - THE KEITH JAMES SONGBOOK'

Book your Burgerme table to avoid disappointment: Call 01497821762 or email eat@globeathay.co.uk
8pm    Tickets £15
Spanning the past 50 years, Keith has performed thousands of enthusiastically received shows in Arts Centres and Theatres throughout the UK. Thoughtful, interpretive concerts devoted to the writing of visionary Songwriters and Poets who he has always admired.
The success of these concerts has been such, that it has somewhat eclipsed Keith’s own material (which has mostly been heard on his 12 Album releases) so the writing and release of this new and significant body of work Word Paintings has given Keith, and those alongside him the confidence to open a door and let this treasure chest of original songs be heard.
The songs from Word Paintings, a stand-alone, much championed, new collection, are at the heart of this concert, set amongst the characterful and fearless songs from Can you imagine 2020, the vital commentary of Paradise lost 2019 and the poetic imagery of Message from the Gods 2017, even some songs that date way back through his music year career. The best collection of Keith’s original material in one concert – which is by no means just music. There is a ‘chatting late into the night at a Taverna’ feel about the backstories and the embryonic seed of inspiration to each of the songs.
‘Anyone who remembers and longs for great songwriting, please listen to this’  How the light gets in.
‘devotion, integrity, experience. All spinning as one’ Guardian Weekly
‘I really enjoyed the Album! It has a haunting quality’  Ian Rankin
‘Brave enough to write the music he truly believes in’  Bob Harris OBE
‘This album more than earns its place in the gallery of old masters’  Mike Davies, Birmingham Radio
‘This album finds a creative and imaginative artist at the peak of his powers’  Trevor Dann. Nick Drake Biographer
‘Word Paintings is a musical triumph’  Radio Caroline
‘There is a delicious soulfulness going on here’ Colin Hall
